NEW Google Doodle celebrates Douglas Adams 61st Birthday!

Today Google celebrated the 61st Birthday of Douglas Adams with a complex, interactive and very cryptic Goggle Doodle.

Those of you that are now looking at the screen blank; are obviously not old enough to remember the brilliant works of this man.

Douglas Adams was a "Frood" and best known for his ingenious cosmic imagination for the 5 novels "HitchHikers Guide to the galaxy" which then continued on to a comedy radio broadcast on Radio 4 which then took off on our screens with a massive following in 1978, soon topping the charts and selling millions.

Adams loved technology and he was using hand held devices like our iphones and e-readers within his books and programmes even back then. He got his first word processor in 1982 and loved Apple computers which he used till his death aged 49 in 2001.

Adams also was the reluctant novelist and published a book authored by Neil Gaiman called "Dont Panic". He then went on to write with Monty Pythons Graham Chapman “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe” (1980), “Life, the Universe and Everything” (1982), “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish” (1984) and “Mostly Harmless” (1992).

He also went onto write some episodes of Dr Who, another favourite of mine, I think back in the seventies we were all in love with these new science fiction programmes popping up like Blakes seven, Logans Run and of course Dr who; but it was Hitchhikers that claimed such a massive following of dedicated followers with an online Hitchhikers wiki dedicated to the truly amazing works of Douglas Adams.

Douglas was also a massive advocate of the environment and loved wildlife with a passion and raised awareness for Save the Rhino

But Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was probably what we all remember Douglas for; so Google have celebrated him and his Birthday within this fun interactive doodle.
So take a peek at this doodle and see if you can see what each image and object represents.

  • The doodle plays music and sound effects which you can mute if you wish by using the button in the image, click on the magnifying glass and it will take you to Googles page about Douglas
  • The cup of tea represents one of his Dirk Gently novels  “The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul”
  • Click the door and you will get a peek of Marvin the paranoid Android.
  • The space towel represents the space travel towel for which he said "is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have".Towel also means "A man not to be reckoned with" in the Hitchhiker wiki.
  • Keep clicking this "Calculator" for different insights to the the world of Douglas Adams. Dont Panic is written on it, important advice for the Hitchhiker. Plus his own book.
  • “Don’t Panic: Douglas Adams & the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
  • Deep thought  was a computer programmed to calculate the answer to the ultimate question in life and it finally comes up with 42.
  • The best drink in existence was the Pan Galactic gargle blaster- "Giving the effect of having your brains smashed out with a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick".
  • The restaurant at the end of the universe another brilliant novel.
  • The famous Babel fish is an online translater now but in Hitchhiker you can insert it into your ear and it will translate in to any language.
  • Look even closer and you will see a mix of objects strewn across the computer which spells out Google. its quite hard to see...well done Google.

If you have found more please let me know and I'll add them to the list.

Happy 61st Birthday
Douglas!
Thank you for making us smile and giving us another world to live in while we were growing up.
